한국언론, 왜 외국인에게는 '사실 확인' 안 할까?

美LA공항의 세관 및 국경경비대에 따르면, 최근 한국의 걸 그룹(K-Pop group) ‘오마이 걸’이 미국 관광을 위한 비자 발급을 제대로 하지 않았다가 “미국에서 ‘매춘부’로 활동할 수 있다”는 ‘오해’를 받고 입국이 거절된 사건이 있었다고 한다.

이 사건이 美세관 당국의 ‘오해’로 벌어진 일이었다고 해도 한미 양국 사회가 가진 선입견과 이에 바탕을 둔 언론 보도 등을 떠올려보면 미국인과 한국인이 서로를 완벽히 이해하는 것은 어려움을 알 수 있다. 특히 관련된 ‘사실’들이 일부 누락되면 한미 간의 오해는 더욱 커진다.

게으른 언론이나 일부 언론의 좌파 성향을 고려해도, 최근 한국 언론을 통해 보도된 두 명의 미국인에 대한 사례는 이러한 한미 양 사회 간의 선입견과 오해가 존재함을 보여준다.

첫 번째 사례는 극좌운동가 앤 라이트(Ann Wright) 씨가 한국 정부에 반대하는 활동, 특히 제주해군기지 건설 반대활동에 가담했던 일에 대한 보도다.

일부 한국 매체는 라이트 씨가 최근 제주도를 찾아 反한국군 시위를 벌일 때 그의 신분이 ‘평화재향군인회(Veterans for Peace)’라는 사실을 보도하지 않았다. 이는 ‘사실’ 확인 차원에서 뿐만 아니라 한국의 국익을 위해서도 필요한 일이었다.

라이트 씨가 ‘평화재향군인회’의 일원으로 지난 5월 ‘위민 크로스 DMZ’에 참가해 북한에 갔다가 한국으로 온 것이나 지난 3월, 매우 잘못된 북한 체제와 그 정책, 지도자를 옹호하는 활동을 했다는 사실 또한 한국 언론의 보도에는 빠져 있었다.

이는 전체주의 북한과 자유민주주의 한국에 대해 전혀 다른 ‘이중 잣대’를 이용하는 외국인들이 한국을 찾았을 때 (한국 언론들이) 보도하는 행태로 보인다.

한국 언론은 또한 ‘평화재향군인회’가 그들의 홈페이지를 통해 1950년 6.25전쟁이 남침에 의한 것이 아니라 한국의 북침이라고 주장하고, 김씨 일가의 잔혹한 독재체제에 동정적이며 북한 측이 주민들에게 잔혹한 인권탄압을 한다는 사실을 외면한다는 점도 알리지 않았다.

이런 사실을 밝히는 것은 한국과 북한 체제에 대한 ‘이중 잣대’와 위선적인 태도를 가진 ‘평화재향군인회’와 라이트 씨의 속성이 한국 국민들의 현명한 판단을 하는 데 상당한 도움을 주는 정보가 될 것이라는 생각에서다.

라이트 씨는 제주해군기지 건설에 반대했을 뿐만 아니라 ‘위민 크로스 DMZ’에 관여했던 ‘크리스틴 안(Christine Ahn)’과 함께 북한인권결의안에도 반대한다는 선언을 한 바 있다.

라이트 씨는 미국의 인권활동가들을 향해 “북한 체제에 대한 ‘대결적 접근’을 중단해야 한다”고 주장한, 바로 그 사람이다.

라이트 씨가 지난 3월 ‘위민 크로스 DMZ’에 참여해 독재자 김정은의 편을 들고 한국 정부에 맞서 제주해군기지 반대 시위를 참석했다는 중요한 사실을 무시하거나 언급하지 않은 것은 한국 일부 매체와 기자들이 좌편향이라는 것을 보여준다.

두 번째 사례는 현재 한국 정부와 한미군사동맹에 격렬히 반대하는 극좌운동가이자 작가인 ‘팀 셜록(Tim Shorrock)’으로, 그는 지난 11월 서울 광화문에서 급진노조가 박근혜 대통령을 청와대에서 끌어내리자며 벌인 폭력적 시위의 결과를 지지한 적도 있는 사람이다.

셜록 씨의 이름은 지난 주 극좌 성향의 잡지 ‘더 네이션’에 “뉴욕 한국영사관이 박근혜 대통령을 비난한 미국 언론에 문제를 제기했다”는 그의 기사가 게재되면서 한국 언론에 등장했다.

셜록 씨를 보도한 한국 언론 가운데는 그를 오랜 기간 ‘영웅’처럼 묘사한, 히스테리컬한 ‘한겨레신문’ 뿐만 아니라 주류 언론도 있었다. 하지만 한국 언론들은 셜록 씨가 쓴 기사의 행간이나 논란의 여지가 있는 그의 과거 행적, 배경에 대한 ‘사실’ 확인을 게을리 한 것으로 보였다.

외부인들이 보기에 진짜 ‘스캔들’은 셜록 씨가 묘사한 뉴욕 한국영사관의 격렬한 항의가 아니라 한국 언론들이 여기에 대해 보도하면서 셜록 씨가 평소 주장해 왔던 극단적인 정치적 발언과 신념을 제대로 보도하지 않은 것이다.

미국의 경우에는 정부와 언론이 상호 소통을 통해 보도를 하지만, (뉴욕 영사관에 대한) 한국 일부 언론의 보도와 정치인의 주장은 마치 ‘스캔들’이 실제 존재하는 것처럼 만들려 한다는 느낌을 강하게 주고 있다.

일부 선입견을 바탕으로 한 보도에서 셜록 씨를 묘사한 부분은 한국 외교부가 언론 전반에 대해 ‘검열’을 실시하고 있는 것처럼 여기도록 만들어 그를 기쁘게 한 것으로 보인다.

실은 미국 정부 관계자, 특히 백악관 관계자나 고위 관료들조차도 자신들에 대한 보도에 관해 언론에 매우 강한  표현으로 불만을 털어놓고 심지어 ‘위협’까지 하는 것에 대해 대부분의 미국인들이 잘 알고 있음에도 말이다.

오바마 정부가 불편한 관계인 자유주의자인 밥 우드워드(워터게이트 사건의 그가 맞다)나 보수적인 ‘폭스 뉴스’처럼 일부 유명한 기자나 언론사들을 향해 정부 고위 관료가 취재를 거부하거나 폭언을 하거나, 이미 공개된 정부 자료 등에 접근하는 것조차 제한하기도 했다.

뉴욕 한국영사관은 어떻게든 자국의 이익에 해가 될까 하는 우려를 정중하게 전달한 것이어서, 미국 사회에서 영향력을 가진 美정부의 고위관료가 언론의 자유를 침해하거나 언론을 이용해 권력을 행사하는 것을 잘 아는 미국 사람들이 보기에는 이것이 ‘압력’이었다는 주장은 우스울 뿐이다.

일부 한국 언론들이 셜록 씨에 대해 보도함으로써 한국 대중들의 호응을 바탕으로 뉴욕 한국영사관의 항의를 ‘스캔들’로 만들고자 했지만, 지난 몇 년 동안 미국의 기자와 언론사가 미국 정부로부터 더 심한 대접을 받았다는 사실을 잘 알고 있는 미국 사회에서는 이런 의도가 우둔한 것이었으며 결국 실패로 돌아갔다.

한국 언론들은 셜록 씨가 한국 통합진보당의 열렬한 지지자로써 2013년 극좌 진영이 개최한 ‘평화 심포지움’에도 외국인 공산주의자, 음모론자와 함께 초청을 받았으며, 오랜 기간 동안 이석기를 지지했다는 것을 전하지 않았다는 것은 보도의 기초인 ‘사실 확인’도 안 되었음을 보여준다.

게다가 본인이 ‘막시스트’임을 인정하는 셜록 씨가 스스로를 자유주의적 언론인이라면서도 외국인 가운데는 공산주의 단체인 세계 노동자당과 함께 이석기 수준으로 북한 체제를 옹호하고 있다.

여기어 더해, ‘한겨레’는 그렇다 해도 한국의 다른 주류 언론들조차도 미국에 근거를 둔 북한인권단체나 인권운동가와 접촉해 셜록 씨처럼 그들의 활동에 반대하는 사람들에 대한 정보와 끔찍한 범죄를 저지르는 북한 김정은 집단에 대한 정보 등을 얻을 노력을 하지 않았다.

셜록 씨는 심지어 서울대 대학원을 졸업하고 수십 년 동안 한국에 대해 공부한, 한국말이 유창한 북한인권운동가를 가리켜 한반도 상황에 대해 “아는 게 없다”고 주장한다. 한국 정부는 탈북자 지원으로 한국에서 상을 받은, 존경받는 인권운동가에 대해 아무런 지원도 해주지 않고 있다. 

이런 사실들은 한국 사회에 셜록 같은 사람뿐만 아니라 존 F.케네디나 버락 오바마를 ‘美제국주의’의 수호자로 간주하는 극단주의자들을 돕는 사람이 있음을 의미한다.

조선일보에서부터 CNN에 이르기까지 대부분의 언론들이 언론의 비평 기능을 극단적인 단어를 사용해가며 강조하면서도 셜록 씨가 악마적인 북한의 지도부에 대해 대신 변명을 하며 언론적 비평을 하지 않는 부당한 태도를 제대로 보도하지 않는 점 또한 아이러니다.

셜록 씨는 지난 5월 ‘위민 크로스 DMZ’ 행진을 조직한 그의 친구 ‘크리스틴 안’에게 한국 기자가 김정은 독재를 전제로 몇 가지 질문을 하자 매우 적대적인 태도를 보이기도 했다.

참고로 ‘크리스틴 안’은 천안함 폭침이 북한의 소행이 아니라고 부정하고 김정은 독재 체제를 옹호하는 활동을 미국에서 활발히 벌인 바 있다.

지난 5월 ‘위민 크로스 DMZ’ 참가자들은 판문점을 통해 북한에서 한국으로 들어올 때 임진각에 모여 있던 북한인권운동가들을 만나자, 북한 독재체제에 대한 비판을 거부하고 한국 정부와 대통령에 대해 강한 비난을 퍼부었다. 셜록 씨는 당시 상황에 대해 사실이나 구체적인 근거를 제시하지 않고 ‘좌익 정치인’의 조언에 따라 좌익 진영의 주장들만 보도하려 했다.

나는 전문적인 기자가 아니어서 좌익 진영에서 전형적으로 말하는 것과 같은, 언론에 한국 정부의 압력을 경험한 바는 없어 내세우지는 않는다. 하지만 비슷한 사례는 겪은 적이 있다.

2014년 겨울, 나는 한국의 좌익 성향 도지사 한 명이 LA를 방문할 계획이라는 것을 알았다. 이때 그 도지사를 LA로 초청한 단체는 ‘재미종북’이라 불릴 정도로 북한 체제에 우호적이고 공산주의에 개방적인 극좌 한인단체였다.

나는 당시 도지사가 관련 단체의 행사에 참석하면 안 된다는 경고를 하기 위해 한국의 주요 언론들에 해당 내용을 알리고 공론화하기 위해 노력을 했지만 LA 반한 단체들의 힘 때문에 결국 무산됐다.

확실하지는 않지만, 내가 언론사들에 관련 내용을 제보했을 때 언론사 내부의 누군가가 이 정보를 해당 도지사 측에 전달했고, 이들은 다시 언론사에 압력을 넣어 기사화가 되고 공론화하는 것을 막은 게 분명해 보였다.

나는 기자들에게 LA 지역에서 행사를 주최하는 단체가 북한에 우호적인 성향을 갖고 있다는 확실한 근거들도 제공했지만, 외부에서의 ‘압력’은 매우 효과적이었고 언론사들은 해당 내용이 정치문제가 되는 것을 피했다. 그렇게 내 제보는 기사화되지 못했다.

이것이 실제로 일어난 한국 정부에 의한 ‘정치적 압력’이었지, 지금까지 좌익 성향 매체의 박근혜 대통령에 반대하는 보도는 (미국에서는) ‘기사화할 가치’가 없었기 때문에 그런 일은 일어나지 않았다.

물론 뉴욕 한국영사관이 불만을 제기한 ‘더 네이션’이라는 매체가 스탈린주의와 스탈린, 모택동, 카스트로, 호치민, 폴 포트와 같은 모든 공산주의 독재자를 지지하고, 냉전 기간 동안 미국과 그 적들 간의 갈등에 대해 적의 입장을 대변했다는 나의 생각까지 고려한다면, 이는 논쟁을 해볼 수도 있을 것이다.

물론 ‘더 네이션’이라는 매체는 2004년에는 ‘홀로코스트의 진실’처럼 논란을 일으킬, 반유대주의 광고를 거절한, 존경스러운 과거도 있다.

누군가가 ‘더 네이션’과 접촉해 한국을 향한 극단적인 적대심을 갖고, 노길남이 운영하는 종북매체(?) ‘민족통신’처럼 김정은을 맹목적으로 숭배하도록 요청하는 일은 쓸모없을 것이다.

대부분의 주류 미국인들은 ‘더 네이션’을 마치 ‘미국의 오마이뉴스’처럼 불확실한 정보로 보도하는 매체로 여긴다는 점도 고려해야 한다.

내 기억으로는 ‘오마이뉴스’는 지난해 LA에서 열린 한국전 참전용사 행사 당시 실제로는 100여 명이 참석했음에도 텅 빈 의자 사진을 내보내는 등 부정직한 보도로 사실을 호도한 적이 있다.

불행하게도, 다른 모든 사실들이 뉴욕 한국영사관의 ‘불만 제기’가 잘못된 것이 아니었음을 보여주지만 대다수 한국 언론들은 이를 부정하며 앤 라이트 씨, 평화재향군인회, 팀 셜록 씨의 주장과 ‘더 네이션’의 기사로 보도를 채웠다.

일부 매체들의 선입견에 따른 잘못된 보도 사례 하나를 말한 것이지만, 한국에서는 이런 일들이 지난 몇 년 동안 일어났다.

예전에 한국의 한 좌익 성향 정치인이 ‘친일청산’을 외쳤을 때도 한국의 보수 진영에서 그의 가족(부친)이 일제 강점시절 독립 운동가를 탄압했던 일제 경찰이었음이 밝혀낸 일도 있었다. 이때 일부 좌익 성향 매체들이 ‘사실’을 무시하는 위선적인 태도로 자신들의 ‘커버스토리’를 썼다가, 보수 신문들의 면밀한 심층취재를 통해 사실이 드러나 대중들의 반발을 사기도 했다.

최근 한국 매체들이 두 외국인(앤 라이트, 팀 셜록)에 대한 구체적인 사실을 제대로 보도하지 않은 것은 이런 일처럼 부끄러운 것 아닐까. 

아마도 미래에 어떤 양심적인 기자가 독자들의 공익을 위해 두 외국인에 대한 ‘사실’과 그들의 과거 발언에 대해 자세히 조사해 보도할 수도 있다.

참고로 한국의 극좌가 매우 사랑하는 ‘노암 촘스키’의 경우 (캄보디아 공산정권인) 크메르 루즈가 대학살(Holocaust)을 저지른 적이 없다고 부정하는 과거 발언으로 매우 많은 논란이 있었고 미국 사회에서 극단주의자로 꼽힌다는 사실을 잘 모르는 한국의 ‘팬들’에게는 이런 심층취재가 좋은 출발점이 될 수 있으리라 본다.

원문: Mistaken Identities and Sloppy Reporting

According to a source at US Customs and Border Protection at Los Angeles International Airport, the recent incident involving the members of the Korean K-Pop group Oh My Girl turns out to have really been related to their lack of the required work visas to perform in the US and not, as earlier mistakenly reported, due to any misunderstanding as to their possibly being prostitutes. 

Even though this was not a case of mistaken identity, however, the story does serve to remind us that there have certainly been other cases of misunderstandings, both cultural and political in nature and sometimes due to shoddy or biased reporting, which often make it difficult for Americans to fully understand Korea and for Koreans to properly understand the US. 

The omission of relevant facts certainly contributes to such misunderstandings. 

Two recent examples of a failure to correctly assess and identify foreigners in the news in Korea, both of which unfortunately involved journalistic laziness and the left-wing bias of some media, prevented Koreans from knowing key facts surrounding two Americans who were the subjects of reporting by the Korean press this month.

The first case involves the extreme-left activist Ann Wright, who is strongly opposed to the current ROK government and its military and, in particular, is an active campaigner against the Jeju island naval base. 

While several Korean media outlets reported on Wright's recent visit to Jeju to participate in the anti-ROK military protests there and correctly identified her and some of the other foreign protesters as being members of the group "Veterans for Peace," I could not find any mention in the various reports I read which mentioned two rather significant facts which the Korean public would certainly have an interest in knowing. 

It was not reported that Wright was in the ROK and North Korea last May as a participant in the "Women Cross DMZ" march and that Wright and several of her fellow march participants, both before, during and after the events surrounding that march, made it clear that they believed that it was both very wrong and counter-productive for them to engage in any significant criticism of the North Korean regime, its policies and its leaders.

Surely it is newsworthy when foreigners visiting Korea react to totalitarian North Korea and the democratic ROK in a totally different manner by applying a dishonest double-standard.

There was also no mention in any of the reporting about these recent protests on Jeju that the Veterans for Peace group has been very sympathetic to the North Korean regime, such as the facts that some of its leading members have denied or downplayed the horrific human rights abuses of the Kim dictatorship, and even claimed in articles posted on the group's website that it was really the ROK, and not North Korea, which started the Korean War in 1950. 

Such facts would seem to be highly relevant to the story and would have helped the Korean public to make an informed judgment about the nature of Veterans for Peace and what can only be called the blatant double-standard and hypocrisy of Wright with regard to how she speaks and acts so very differently about the North Korean regime and the ROK. 

Wright not only opposes the Jeju base, but along with Women Cross DMZ leader Christine Ahn, signed an absurd statement declaring the base a "crime against humanity"! 

This is the same Ms. Wright who has written that human rights activists in the US should stop their "confrontational" approach to the North. 

It was surely negligence or left-wing bias on the part of some media outlets and reporters not to have mentioned these seemingly important facts, such as noting at least that Wright was in Korea earlier this year as part of the Women Cross DMZ march, and pointing out the glaring hypocrisy inherent in protesting against an ROK naval base while refusing to publicly admit that Kim, Jong-un is a brutal dictator.

The second case involves the extreme-left activist and writer Tim Shorrock, who is also strongly opposed to the current ROK government and the US-ROK military alliance, and would apparently like to see President Park removed from office as the result of nationwide protests by radical unions whose violent tendencies were on display for all to see last November at Gwanghwamun.

Shorrock's name was all over the Korean media last week after the ROK Consulate in New York called the far-left NATION MAGAZINE to rather timidly and politely express their concern that an article they had published by Shorrock was unfair. 

The reporting, not only from the nearly hysterical Hankyoreh Shinmun, which has long had a case of hero worship for Shorrock, but also from the more mainstream media, was negligent and sorely lacking in relevant context and background regarding both the common practice of government criticism of reporters and news media in the US and with regard to Shorrock's background and highly controversial views. 

The real scandals were the sloppy coverage of the so-called scandal involving Shorrock and the total omission of any reference to his rather shocking and extreme political statements and beliefs, as well as the misleading and ignorant portrayal of the N.Y. Consulate's complaint as something wildly improper or somehow alien to what is actually standard and accepted practice in the US. 

In order to give the impression of a scandal where none exists, some media outlets and even some politicians tried to create phony outrage by completely ignoring the context of how government and the media actually interact in US society.

Some biased reports portrayed Shorrock, to his evident delight, as a victim of attempted "censorship" by the ROK Foreign Ministry, while totally ignoring the fact, well-known to most Americans, that it is a very common and historically well-established practice in the US for administrations and specifically high-ranking government officials to call news outlets and complain to them, sometimes in an extremely harsh and threatening manner, about stories which the president or some official of the White House press office considers unfair. 

Some famous reporters and media companies who have displeased the Obama administration, such as the liberal Bob Woodward (famous for his Watergate stories) and the conservative FOX News, have been verbally savaged by top administration officials, and some media outlets and reporters were denied coverage and interview opportunities and even kept off of campaign flights because they had published or broadcast reports which displeased the administration. 

The ROK's N.Y. Consulate, unlike an influential US administration official, exercises no power in American politics or over the US media, and the notion that it somehow seriously infringed on America's press freedom merely by expressing its concerns to THE NATION and requesting a meeting with its editor is laughable considering the common practice of American officials who regularly express their complaints to the media in far less polite terms.

By completely failing to note the highly relevant and even essential fact that much harsher and more serious instances of real pressure which have been exerted by administration officials on US reporters and news companies just over the past several years, and that it is a well-known practice in the US, some Korean media did a great disservice to the Korean public and gave it an entirely false impression of the situation regarding Shorrock which even resulted in some politicians revealing their ignorance of America by engaging in crass political opportunism over the supposed "scandal".

To make matters worse, not a single report on this non-scandal bothered to note even the most basic facts about Shorrock, the individual at the center of the story, when a simple online search would have provided any Korean journalist with some rather newsworthy information about him, such as the fact that he is a hardcore defender of the Unified Progressive Party who was invited by the UPP to speak at a far-left "peace symposium" in 2013 together with some other foreign Marxists, and conspiracy theorists, and that Shrrorck is a steadfast supporter of the convicted former UPP lawmaker Lee, Seok-ki.

Indeed, Shorrock, a self-admitted Marxist, is probably Lee, Seok-ki's top non-Korean fan in the US today outside of the communist Workers World Party, a group whose fanatical support for the North, it is interesting to note, Shorrock has defended against critical articles by liberal journalists. 

Further, although the Hankyoreh is apparently not interested in such relevant facts about people it writes about, any mainstream Korean media outlet which did even the slightest due diligence by contacting some of the leading US-based North Korea human rights groups and activists, would have learned that they consider Shorrock to be an opponent of their efforts to expose the ongoing horrific crimes of the Kim, Jong-un regime.

Shorrock has even claimed that well-known human rights campaigners, such as a graduate of Seoul National University who speaks fluent Korean and has devoted decades to the study of Korea, "knows nothing" of the situation on the peninsula, and a highly respected activist such as one who was awarded a medal by the ROK for work helping defectors, has "no support" in Korea.

These facts would surely have been helpful to Koreans in understanding just who Shorrock is, and whether or not they should trust the judgement of someone so extreme that he considers Presidents John F. Kennedy and Barack Obama to both be defenders of US "imperialism".

It is another ironic but unreported aspect of the story that Shorrock, far from being a responsible media critic, makes a practice of using the most extreme language to savagely slander any and all reporters and news outlets, from the Chosun Ilbo to CNN, for reports which he feels unfairly "demonize" North Korea, its leaders and its foreign apologists. 

When Shorrock was in Korea last May to cover the Women Cross DMZ march which was organized by his friend and colleague Christine Ahn, (whose role as an apologist for the North Korean regime is known to many in the US and is demonstrated by her denial that the North attacked the Cheonan and her absolute refusal to publicly state the basic fact that Kim, Jong-un is a dictator) he condemned the Korean reporters who sought to ask Ahn some questions, and even implied that the fact that some of the reporters were male made them "hostile" to Ahn and her delegation. 

When protesters including defectors from the North and human rights activists gathered near Imjingak last May to express their contempt for the blatantly hypocritical refusal of Women Cross DMZ members who to offer any serious or public criticism of the North Korean regime, while they have for years harshly condemned the ROK government and its leaders, Shorrock falsely implied that the protesters were somehow acting on in the service of or being paid by the ROK authorities, without citing any concrete evidence other than claiming it was something that was commonly known and that he had been told so by a left-wing aide to a left-wing politician.

Although I am not a journalist, I happen to have had some experience with government pressure on the media in the ROK, but my experience did not make the headlines, since it did not fit a left-wing stereotype. 

In the Winter of 2014, I was truly shocked to learn that a left-wing governor of a certain Korean province was planning a visit to L.A. and that one of his events there was being hosted and promoted by some very extreme Korean-American groups which were sympathetic to North Korea and closely allied with some hardcore and well-known pro-North and openly communist groups and individuals there.

I tried my best to make an issue of this in the Korean media in order to warn the governor not to appear at the event with those groups and that he was being manipulated by anti-ROK forces in L.A, but my efforts were frustrated. 

Apparently, as described to me by the directly involved producer at the media company to which I had shared the story, word of my information had leaked out to members of the governor's staff, and they called the media company to pressure the reporters involved not to publish or broadcast the story, which they falsely claimed was not accurate. 

I responded to the reporters who faced this intimidation by sending them concrete evidence of which groups were hosting the L.A. event and the fact that they were sympathetic to the North, but by that time the pressure had been effective, and the media company decided, to avoid any political problems, not to use the story. 

That was a real case of political pressure, but since it was not related to the current ROK government and did not fit the anti-Park, Geun-hye narrative of some leftist media, it was therefore not considered newsworthy.

Of course, one may debate whether or not the rather mild complaint by the N.Y. Consulate was likely to be effective considering the nature of THE NATION magazine, which has had a rather despicable history of defending Stalinism and was described by one conservative author as having "supported every Communist dictator in their heyday -- Stalin, Mao, Fidel, Ho, even Pol Pot -- and on every issue involving conflict between the United States and any of its sworn enemies during the Cold War, invariably tilted towards (and often actively sided with) the enemy side." 

THE NATION is also controversial for having accepted anti-semitic advertisements, as recently as 2004, which denied the truth of the Holocaust, something with no respectable magazine would do. 

The idea of anyone contacting THE NATION to try and soften their extremely hostile stance toward the ROK, would be as useless as one contacting Roh, Kil-nam's fanatically pro-North "Minjok Tongshin" website and asking it to change its position of blindly worshiping Kim, Jong-un! 

Most mainstream Americans would consider THE NATION to be the US equivalent of Korea's "OhmyNews," an often unreliable source of information.

I recall, for example, how "OhmyNews" last year dishonestly gave its readers a false impression of an event in L.A. honoring veterans of the Korean War by publishing a totally misleading photo of empty chairs after the event had ended, when in fact over 100 people had attended that tribute.

Unfortunately, all of the above facts, which are highly relevant to understanding the stories involved and individuals at the center of them, were completely ignored by every Korean media report, thus denying essential context and background information to the Korean public which would enable informed consideration of the issues raised concerning Ms. Wright, Veterans for Peace, THE NATION, Mr. Shorrock, and the complaint by the N.Y. Consulate. 

One can only compare this shoddy reporting by some media and clear bias by others, to the situation which occurred several years ago in the ROK. 

A certain left-wing politician who had vocally criticized some Korean conservatives for allegedly having pro-Japanese ties was later discovered to have had a close relative who had served with the Japanese police during the colonial period and had helped to track down Korean independence activists! 

Some left-wing media outlets initially ignored and attempted to cover-up this outrageous hypocrisy, and it was only revealed to the public thanks to the diligent investigative reporting at some conservative newspapers. 

It is a shame that the Korean public was not provided with more relevant facts about the two foreigners noted above who were recently covered in the Korean media. 

Perhaps in future such due diligence will be done by conscientious reporters who give the public more essential background information on foreigners whose names are mentioned in their stories. 

A good starting point might be some investigative reports on the highly controversial nature of Noam Chomsky, the darling of Korea's far-left, which would reveal that he is widely considered to be an extremist in the US for his past defense of the Khmer Rouge and of Holocaust Deniers, facts about which most Korean fans of Chomsky are completely unaware.
