도산 안창호 선생의 태극기를 헌정하며

6·25 참전 전몰장병께 도산 안창호 선생의 태극기를 헌정하며

오늘 우리는 대한민국의 자유와 평화를 지키다 산화한 6·25 참전 전몰 용사들의 고귀한 희생을 기리기 위해 이 자리에 모였습니다.

특히 지구 반대편, 그 이름도 생소한 대한민국을 위해 이억만리 먼 거리도 마다하지 않고 한반도의 자유와 평화를 위해 싸우다 목숨을 바치신 다양한 국적의 UN군 참전 용사분들께 감사와 조의를 표합니다.

포성이 그치지 않던 치열한 백마고지 전투 중에 쓸쓸하고 외진 이곳에서 용맹하게 싸우다 한줌의 재로 산화해 간 참전용사의 희생이 있었기에 오늘날 대한민국이 우뚝 설 수 있었습니다.

그러나 오늘 이 자리에 모인 우리 6·25공원 건립 국민운동본부 회원들과 사단법인 물망초 회원들은 버려지듯 황폐해 진 UN군 화장장의 모습을 보며 한없이 부끄럽고 죄송한 마음에 고개를 들 수가 없습니다.

우리가 결코 잊어서는 안 되는 그 감사의 마음을 그동안 다 하지 못 했습니다. 민주화와 산업화에 매진하느라 우리가 기억해야 할 것들을 우리는 그만 챙기지 못 해왔습니다.

앞으로는 ‘행동하는 양심’으로 한반도의 자유와 평화, 번영은 물론 전 세계의 자유와 평화를 위해 우리가 먼저 솔선수범하겠습니다.

그 다짐의 일환으로 ‘애기애타(愛己愛他)’의 정신과 후속세대 교육에 헌신하셨던 도산 안창호 선생의 정신을 이 자리에서 되새기고자 합니다.

도산이 작사한 애국가 가사처럼 ‘가을하늘 높고 구름 없이 공활한’ 오늘, ‘변하지 않는 기상’과 ‘일편단심’으로 한반도 통일과 세계평화에 헌신하겠습니다.

6·25 전장에 나갔다가 돌아오지 못 한 포로분들도 잊지 않겠습니다. 그분들이 가족과 조국의 품으로 무사 귀환할 수 있도록 최선을 다 하겠습니다.

그 다짐의 징표로 오늘, 이 자리에 모인 우리는 도산선생이 고이 간직하셨던 태극기를 이 자리에 헌정하고자 합니다. 오늘 우리가 헌정하는 이 태극기는 도산선생의 외증손자인 화가 Michael Gittes씨가 도산정신을 되새기며 제작한 작품입니다.
 
마지막 마무리는 우리 물망초 사무실에서 했기에 더 의미가 있습니다. 그동안 이 외지고 황량한 곳에서 한없이 외롭고 쓸쓸하셨을 6·25 전몰 용사들의 영령들이시여, 이제 그만 한(恨)을 푸시고 편히 잠드소서.

당신들의 희생이 결코 헛되지 않았음은 태극기의 태극문양이 영원히 입증해 줄 것입니다. 음양이 조화롭게 휘몰아쳐 마침내 평온을 만들어내듯 그렇게 우리는 역경 속에서도 세계평화를 위해 헌신할 것입니다.

영웅들이여, 부디 영면하소서.

     We Offer Dosan Ahn Chang-Ho’s Tae Geuk Flag to Soldiers
             Who Perished in the Korean War
 
 
We are gathered here today to commemorate our heroes who sacrificed themselves
 to protect freedom and peace for Korea.
 
Especially, we thank those who came here from halfway around the world to fight for Korea.
 
The Republic of Korea stands tall today      because of these brave souls
who gave their lives among these desolate hills.
 
As we,   members of Korean War Memorial Park Committee and Mulmangcho  association,
stand here by these ruins of the UN crematorium, we are very humbled.
 
We feel that   we have not done enough for them   and their sacrifice.
We have not remembered them,   thanked them,   as we should have.
We have forgotten about them   while we were too busy building our economy
and building our democracy. 
 
From this day forward,   we will lead the way to attain freedom and peace   for all of Korea
for all the world to see.    
We are here to express our commitment  to  our mission statement—“conscience in action.”
 
Also, we are here to commit ourselves to the education of our youth,
 just as Dosan Ahn Chang-Ho had.
 
We want to remember his   Ae Ki Ae Ta spirit,   that means     “Love Yourself, Love Others.”
 
We pledge ourselves   to unification   of Korea   and world peace  on this pristine autumn day,
like the day Dosan wrote about in our Aegukka, our national anthem—
“autumn sky is tall without a cloud.”
 
On this beautiful day, we will begin our journey, “as one heart, and steady as this autumn day.”
 
We shall remember our prisoners of war from the Korean War sixty-five years ago.
 
Some are yet to be returned.
We will do our utmost to bring them   into the arms  of their beloved family   and  motherland.
 
We offer Dosan’s Tae Geuk  flag  in a show of our pledge.
 
This flag is an artwork by Michael Gittes,   Dosan’s  great  grandson.
 
He produced this art in remembrance of great  grandfather and his spirit.
It is particularly meaningful to Mulmangcho, because it was finalized at our Mulmangcho office.
 
We present this flag to all the lonely souls and pray   that they rest in peace.
 
This Tae Geuk mark will forever remain   a symbol for their sacrifice.
 
Its Ying Yang will always be alive in harmony,
and we will give ourselves   to world peace     regardless of   all the difficulties    we face.
 
Our heroes,    please  rest  in  peace.
