한국인 최초로 북미아이스하키리그(NHL)에 진출했던 짐 팩(47·Jim Paek·한국명 백지선)이 대한민국 남자 국가대표팀 감독이 됐다. 대한아이스하키협회(회장 정몽원)는 짐 팩을 남자 국가대표팀 감독에 선임한다고 23일 공식 발표했다. 계약 기간은 4년이다.

서울에서 태어나 1세 때 부모를 따라 캐나다에 이민을 간 짐 팩은 1990년대 초반 NHL 명문 피츠버그 펭귄스에서 수비수로 활약했다. 2005년부터는 NHL 하부리그인 아메리칸하키리그(AHL)그랜드 래피즈 그리핀스의 코치로 부임해 지난해까지 총 9시즌을 치렀다.

짐 팩은 지난 17일, 2박3일 일정으로 고국을 방문해 정몽원 회장과 만나 대표팀 감독직을 수락했다. 짐 팩 대한민국 남자아이스하키 대표팀 신임 감독은 "대한민국이 2018년 평창 동계올림픽 출전권을 획득하는 것은 큰 도전이 되겠지만 철저한 계획을 세워 노력하겠다"고 말했다. 

대한민국 남자 아이스하키는 세계 랭킹 23위에 머물러 있다.

    짐 팩은 누구?

    1967년 서울에서 태어나 1살 때 부모님을 따라 캐나다로 이민을 갔다.  7살 때 처음 아이스하키를 시작했다.  수비수였던 그는 1985년 9라운드(전체 170번째)로 피츠버그 펭귄스에 지명돼 NHL과 인연을 맺었다. 1991년 NHL에 데뷔. 수비수로써 통산 217 NHL 경기를 뛰며 5골 29어시스트(34포인트)를 올렸다. 1996년, 한국 실업팀 만도 위니아(안양 한라 전신) 소속으로 한국 아이스하키를 경험하기도 했다. 당시 동료 선수들과 함께 한국 드라마 아이싱(장동건 주연의 아이스하키 주제 드라마)을 같이 찍기도 했다. 2003년 영국 하키리그를 끝으로 선수로써 은퇴. 같은 해 북미 마이너하키리그의 올랜도 실스의 감독을 맡으면서 지도자 생활을 시작. 2005년부터 2013년까지 NHL 디트로이트 레드윙스의 산하 그랜드 라피즈 그리핀스의 코치 역임.
